The Wisconsin Bookworms™ Program in Washington County is sponsored by:
- Washington County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE)
- University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension
Statewide and locally, HCE members work with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension Youth, Family & Community Development Programs to provide books free of charge to children from families with limited resources who might otherwise not have a chance to cherish a book of their own. Volunteer mentors meet with the children 8 times a year, read a book to them, and then give them the book and an activity sheet to share with their family. The project is a tremendous success!
What We Are Doing
Washington County has approximately 258 children enrolled in the various Head Start and child care centers this year. Some HCE members along with other volunteers to read to the children.
Our Goals
Because of the enthusiastic response that the Wisconsin Bookworms™ Program received from the volunteer mentors, children, parents and teachers, we feel every effort should be made to continue this activity. Washington County HCE is reaching out to Washington County families and children and letting books be the bridge to encourage preschool children to read and have a life-long love of learning.
